About Abel

Abel gives honest, independent reviews of UK money apps and budgeting tools for people who manage money from their phone.

By the Abel team ยท Updated 2026

Abel reviews the money apps that are supposed to help you get on top of your money. Budgeting apps, savings tools, banking apps, and the calculators that sit alongside them. We dig into how they actually work, then tell you which ones earn their place and which ones quietly take a monthly fee for very little.

We are built for people in their 20s to 40s who want their finances sorted without reading a finance textbook. If you reach for an app rather than a spreadsheet, this is for you.

Abel is independent. No bank, app maker, or fintech firm pays for a better write-up, and none of them sees a review before it goes live.

How we research

We open accounts and use the apps ourselves, on real phones, with real money moving in and out. We note what the onboarding feels like, where the round-ups land, what a premium tier actually adds, and where the small print bites.

For anything involving your money being safe, we check the primary sources rather than the marketing. That means the provider’s own terms, and the public registers and schemes that sit behind them, including the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) for deposit protection and whether an app is the bank itself or an e-money firm holding funds another way. When we quote a rate, a fee, or an AER, we say when we checked it, because these change.

We do not invent named experts or hand out fake credentials. Everything here is written and checked by the Abel editorial team. When a figure comes from a provider or a public body, we tell you where it came from.

Editorial standards

We aim to be accurate and specific. Plain words, real numbers, and the date we looked. If an app changes its pricing or features after we publish, we update the page rather than leave you with stale advice.

If we get something wrong, we fix it and say so. Found an error or a fee that has moved? Tell us and we will check it.

A note on links

Some outbound links may be affiliate links, which means we might earn a small amount if you sign up through them. This never affects our recommendations. An app that charges too much for too little gets called out whether it pays us or not.
